SA Local Lowdown features Newly Renovated City of Terrell Heights Municipal Facility

This month’s issue of local newspaper, SA Local Lowdown, notes not only the design aspects of mixing the old with the new but also the technological and sustainable improvements made to the City of Terrell Heights municipal complex. The city had outgrown the original building and OCO principal Mickey Conrad and architect John Grable discuss the functionality of housing four municipal departments while also respecting the historic features and terrain.

In addition, the police department spoke highly of the new building and the ways in which it helped them to win the “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency” award. “The award was made possible not only because of the department’s hard work, but also the new complex’s enhanced security features.”

The Spring 2013 issue discusses the “expressive framework” of the LEED Gold home of OCO Principal Mickey Conrad. The website “Eco Building Pulse” also recently profiled OCO Architects for our techniques and philosophy on integrating sustainable design into each and every project.

Patrick J. Heath Library Selected for Library Journal “Year in Architecture” 2012 feature

OCO Wins Architect of the Year from AGC Chapter

Senior Associate Carlos Constantino and Design Team member Stephen Lara accepted the Architect of the Year Award last night on behalf of OCO Architects. The award is given by the Associated General Contractors of America, San Antonio Chapter and selected by a committee of contractors and subcontractors. “The award is given out to the firm that best represents the design industry and the important relationships with our General Contractors and their subcontractors,” said Carlos. “This is an important part of the success of a project.” OCO has won this award twice previously in 1998 and 2006.

1221 Broadway Wins AIA San Antonio Citation Award

On November 2, 2012, AIA San Antonio awarded the OCO and Lake Flato Adaptive Reuse project 1221 Broadway with a Design Citation. This multi-family residential project renovated a blighted, abandoned apartment building and helped to revitalize the River North area just north of downtown San Antonio.

Dr. Judith A. Lozano Building Re-dedication

Senior Associate Carlos Constantino attended the ribon-cutting for the Dr. Judith A. Lozano Professional Development Building at Southside ISD last weekend. Dr. Lozano served as superintendent of Southside ISD 1980-83, becoming the first female Hispanic superintendent in the state of Texas at the ripe old age of 32! Current superintendent Dr. Juan Antonio Jasso and several former SISD board members who served during Dr. Lozano’s tenure attended the ribbon-cutting and rededication ceremony as well.

New Boerne Library Inspires More Visitors

Along with the hard work of the Patrick J. Heath Public Library’s dedicated staff, the new OCO-designed facility led to a significant increase in activity noted assistant library director Natalie Morgan at a Boerne City Council Meeting earlier this summer. Morgan reported that visitors increased by 30 percent in the year since the Library opened last summer, program attendance increased by 42 percent, and library cardholders rose from 13,644 to 16,515. “At the conclusion of the library’s first year of operation (at the new location) we are excited to report that our statistics continue to climb dramatically,” Morgan told the Council. OCO projects win three out of six categories in the 2012 City of San Antonio Green Building Awards.

The partners of OCO Architects, Inc. looked on in surprise as not one, not two, but three of their latest projects won Green Building Awards, distributed by the City on June 20, 2012. These honors were made more special since there were only six categories. OCO clients collected awards for: Multifamily public project (San Antonio Housing Authority’s Lewis Chatham Apartments); Multifamily private project (1221 Broadway Lofts); and the Bill Sinkin Solar Award (Alamo Heights ISD).
